How to turn a recorded lecture into study notes on a Mac
What you need
- The recording, as an audio or video file (
.m4a,.mp3,.wav, or.mp4), or still inside Apple Voice Memos. - A Mac. The manual and transcribe-first methods work on any Mac. The automatic method with LectureSync needs macOS 26 and an Apple Silicon Mac.
- Somewhere to keep the notes. Plain Markdown files in a folder (for example an Obsidian vault) keep them searchable and yours.
Method 1: Take notes by hand while you replay
No setup, and fine for a short clip or one section you care about.
- Open the file in QuickTime Player or the Music app.
- Play it back, pausing to write as you go. Use the playback controls to skip backward a few seconds when you miss something.
- Structure as you write (see the template below) rather than transcribing word for word.
A one-hour lecture takes at least an hour this way, and usually longer once you pause and rewind. Save this method for a short clip or one section you need to inspect closely.
Method 2: Transcribe first, then write notes
Faster, because reading is quicker than re-listening. Two stages: get a transcript, then turn the transcript into notes.
Get a transcript:
- Export or locate the recording as
.m4a,.mp3,.wav, or.mp4. If it is in Voice Memos, select it and drag it to a Finder window, or use Share to save it out. - Run it through a transcription tool. Note where the tool processes your audio: many upload it to a server, which matters for a lecture that may include other people's voices or unpublished material. - Save the transcript as plain text.
macOS Dictation converts speech to text as you speak into the mic; it is not a file-transcription tool. Recent versions of Apple Voice Memos can show a transcript for recordings made there, although the formatting is rough.
Turn the transcript into notes:
- Read the transcript once, top to bottom.
- Split it by topic or by timestamp into sections.
- For each section, pull out the definitions, examples, arguments, and anything the professor clearly flagged as important or "on the exam."
- Drop those into the template below, in your own words.
- Mark anything you are unsure about, and verify it against the audio at that timestamp.

Use “Questions to review” for prompts you can answer from memory later. That self-testing does more for retention than another read-through; the research is covered in does recording lectures actually help you study?
This still takes work, but less than replaying the audio. Choosing what belongs in the note is also useful study time.
Method 3: Let an app transcribe and draft the notes
An automatic workflow takes the same two jobs—transcription and note-writing—and runs them back to back:
- Import an existing recording, or record the lecture directly.
- Choose the transcription option (on-device to keep the audio on your Mac, or a provider you configure).
- Generate the transcript and skim it for obvious errors.
- Generate structured notes from the transcript.
- Check any uncertain points against the timestamps in the recording.
- Save the notes to your Obsidian folder, and generate study cards for self-testing.
Getting the audio in
- Record directly. Start recording at the beginning of class and stop at the end. On a Mac you can capture the microphone, or system audio if the lecture plays through your computer (system-audio capture needs the macOS Screen Recording permission the first time).
- Bring in what you have. Import an existing
.m4a,.mp3,.wav, or.mp4file, or drag an Apple Voice Memo straight in. If you recorded on your iPhone or iPad in Voice Memos, the memo carries its audio (and any transcript) over with it.
What to expect from the notes
A useful result should include:
- Topic headings that follow the lecture's structure
- Definitions and key terms
- Worked examples and, where relevant, equations
- The points the lecturer emphasized
- Timestamps and source quotes, so a note is tied back to where it was said
- Plain Markdown, saved into your notes folder (for example an Obsidian vault), so it is searchable alongside everything else
- A set of study cards per lecture for spaced self-testing

Can I turn a Voice Memo into notes on a Mac?
